Trans-Atlantyk by Witold Gombrowicz is one of those books that I wish I could read in the original language because I know that then I would be reading the true essence of the book. And in this case, a probable masterpiece/5.

Trans-Atlantyk is a semi-autobiographical, satirical novel that throws into heightened perspective all of Gombrowicz's major literary, philosophical, psychological, and social concerns. First published in Paris init is based on the author's experience of being caught in Argentina at the outbreak of World War II.3/5(6).

Borchardt explains in her note at the beginning of "Trans-Atlantyk: An Alternate Translation" (Yale Press ) that Gombrowicz wrote Trans-Atlantyk in the style of a gaweda or "fire side chat," "a tale, a mode of interaction at social gatherings of the sixteenth to nineteenth-century Sarmatian Polish nobility in their country manors."/5(6).

“Trans-Atlantyk is indeed an uproarious book, but it is also deadly serious, exploring the dire straits into which blind allegiance to tradition can lead us.”— America magazine “Most of the book is written in a baroque Polish that flits merrily between tired clichéd phrases, contemporary slurs, and Gombrowiczian neologisms.
